Minutes of Career Development Task Group 11 January 2005

Meeting of Career Development Task Group at the University of Westminster, Marylebone campus, 11 January 2005 2pm – 3.30pm

Present:
David Gee (Chair), Ruth Moore, Antony Loveland, Diana Herman, Sally Maitland, Cathy Parr. 1. Apologies:
Vivien Robertson, Elspeth Keith.

2. Update on Group’s activities:

Chartership workshops
Selling yourself (convenor: Ruth)
Anne Poulson is leading this workshop on 12 January 2005. Anne has led this for the last two years and is happy doing it. She is also happy with the workshop title.

Chartership: what’s it all about (convenor: Antony)
This was a successful session on 6th October 2004, including the after-session drinks. Michael Martin (CILIP) led the session and involved the participants. Feedback was mostly positive.

Copyright law (convenor: Antony)
Fairly successful session on 1st December 2004 – a lot of information to take in, and participants were a bit reluctant to join in during the interactive sections. The venue, Westminster Public Library Training Suite, was not that suitable and Antony didn’t recommend it to be used again.

Customer care (convenor: Diana)
Sheila Richie of ELM training is leading the session on 11th May 2005, as the other ELM trainer dropped out.

Presentation & Teaching Skills (convenor: Sally)
Sally commented that there was some confusion regarding the topic of this session – although it had been decided to focus on teaching, the workshop was being referred to as ‘Presentation Skills’. Sally will check with Sue David, the workshop leader, regarding which topic she would prefer to cover. {Decided to call it “Planning a teaching session?. Session to take place on 9th March 2005. David Gee emphasised that the criteria for Chartership workshop subjects were areas that candidates would not necessarily cover in their own library.

Supervisory skills (convenor: David)
This will be held on 23rd February 2005 and will be a repeat of last year, with Judith Cattermole & Sheron Burton. A very successful interactive session.
Financial planning (convenor: David)
This is arranged to take place at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies with Jules Winterton. A popular session on a very useful topic not normally covered in candidates own libraries.

Current Awareness (convenor: Elspeth)
Elspeth is organising this session for 15th June 2005.

Seminars:
Library & information courses: applying to study LIS (convenor:  Antony)
This was a popular seminar held on 20th October 2004. The speakers were generally of a high standard. The student speaker had just completed a part-time LIS course and was particularly good. Some of the participants commented in their feedback that they would have preferred to hear from a full-time student.

Building a successful portfolio x 2 seminars (convenor: David)
These two forthcoming afternoon sessions on 27th April and 8th June 2005 will focus on the new qualifications framework, exploring the new assessment criteria and how to identify evidence required for portfolios. One seminar will place emphasis on the new Chartership regulations, the other on revalidation. Michael Martin, Gerry Power, Judith Cattermole and Jean Yeoh will lead the sessions and take part in a panel discussion at the end of each seminar.

Visits:
Foreign & Commonwealth Office Library (convenor: Antony)
The tour included an introduction to the library, followed by a tour of the FCO, including Jack Straw’s office. It is doubtful that the visit will take place again, as the FCO is considering relocating the Library to the outskirts of Milton Keynes.

Antony also mentioned that the National Gallery had not responded to his intial enquiry regarding a visit there.

Royal Society
Sally is leading this visit in April.

De Havilland Centre
Cathy reported that the visit went well.

3. Frontliners Day
This is a new session for this year, taking place 14 February. It has developed from a session that Diana has convened before on ‘What makes a successful Graduate Trainee year’ and a session previously convened by Elspeth called “Career Pathways?.  It has been organised by Cathy, Diana and Elspeth, Diana emphasising that Elspeth has done most of the planning. Cathy and Diana will chair the session.

The morning session will focus on ECDL and NVQs. The afternoon session will be led by Gerry Power, and will concentrate on job applications and career moves. The session is aimed not only at graduate trainees, but all those who work as paraprofessionals. Diana emphasised that this is not a CILIP marketing exercise but will look at a range of career paths. Ruth commented that she felt it was an opportunity for her own staff to get out, meet people in other areas and learn.

The day will be held at the Brunei Gallery, Room B204. Antony commented that the Brunei Gallery room in which the ‘Applying to study LIS’ seminar was full to capacity with 40 participants. The room number will be checked, and if it is the same room, the number of participants will be reduced to 25 –30. This will allow for break-out sessions to take place.

David commented that it would be good for this event to take place every year. CPD25 are aware that they should do more for paraprofessionals, so this event tries to fill a gap. It was acknowledged that it is difficult for paraprofessionals to attend training events, and that perhaps a ‘roadshow’ type event might be suitable.

4. Staff Development Officers seminar
This seminar will take place in the morning of the CPD25 review meeting on 7 April, 10.00 to 12.30. The session is being organised by Antony and Cathy and both will chair the session.

The proposed programme is regarding the new CILIP framework, and Marion Huckle has agreed to speak. The format of the seminar has not been finalised. After discussion, it was agreed that the session should perhaps be divided into three parts, each consisting of a talk from Marion Huckle, followed by a short coffee break, followed by a Q & A session. The three talks could cover the changes to the Chartership regulations, the new revalidation proposals and the changes to the Fellowship and the new Certification qualification. A possible title for the session is ‘Implications for SDOs: an initial assessment’.

It was agreed that SDOs would expect answers to a variety of questions regarding supervision process changes, mentoring, quality standards, role of apprasiers and cost impliactions. Diana suggested that participants submit questions before the session.

Antony offered to arrange a meeting with Marion Huckle to discuss the proposed programme, expected questions and the possibility of Michael Martin also becoming involved.  David offered to attend the meeting.

5. Next meeting
The next date for the next Career Development Task Group meeting will be Wednesday 15th June at 2pm. One of the aims of this meeting will be to talk about the implications of the new framework on the CPD25 programme and how the group can tailor courses to meet the demands of revised qualifications and revalidation. The group will also need to start to brainstorm over new ideas for its 2005/2006 programme.
