Minutes of the
second meeting of CPD25 Career Development Task Group held on Tuesday
16th July 2002 at 3.00p.m. in Room L104, Institute of Advanced Legal
Studies.
Present:
David Gee (Chair), Sarah Elsegood, Diana Herman, Angela Jefkins, Elspeth Keith, Cathy Parr, Tim Hoof (Administrator)
1. Apologies
Apologies had been received from Janet Westcott
2. Chartership Events
The Chair explained to members that the following information would be
needed before an event could be advertised; date, time and timing of
the event, full address (including website if possible) and cost for
venue, speakers and any travel costs involved, charges for AV hire and
refreshments. The organisers were encouraged to attend but it was not
compulsory for them to do so.
a) October 2002: Chartership: What's it all about? (Co-ordinator: Sarah Elsegood)
It was confirmed that this event would take place on Friday 11th
October in the new training room at the University of London Library.
Susan Kay from CILIP would speak at this event. The room cost was £80
and tea and coffee would be supplied at a cost of 99p per person.
b) November 2002: Collection Development (including electronic materials) (Co-ordinator: Vivien Robertson)
Members were informed that this event would be held on either Wednesday
6th or Wednesday 20th November at the Maughan Library & Information
Services Centre, King's College. Astrid Wissenberg would be presenting
a slightly amended version of this year's event. There would be no room
hire costs and tea and coffee would be provided for which there would
be a charge.
c) December 2002: Project Management (Co-ordinator: Diana Herman)
Members noted that the arrangements for this event were as per those agreed at the June meeting.
d) January 2003: Selling yourself (Co-ordinator: Janet Westcott)
Members were informed via an email that Keith Webster (School of
Oriental & African Studies) had agreed to speak at and host this
event. A date was yet to be confirmed.
e) February 2003: Financial Planning and budgets (Co-ordinator: David Gee)
Members noted that a date had now been set for this event which would be held on Wednesday 26th February.
f) March 2003: Presentation skills (Co-ordinator: Angela Jefkins)
It was reported that this event would be given by Sue David and her
colleagues at St George's Medical School Library. The event which would
be held at Sat George's would include a tour before the workshop. There
would be no room hire costs.
g) April 2003: Supervisory skills (Co-ordinator: Cathy Parr)
It was confirmed that this event would be held at University College
London on Thursday 10th April using the same speakers as before. Room
hire costs were £150 with tea and coffee at £1.15 per person.
h) May 2003: Customer care (Co-ordinator: Sarah Elsegood)
Suggestions for speakers at this event were sought by the co-ordinator.
i) June 2003: Current issue (Co-ordinator: Elspeth Keith)
Members were informed that Liz Davies (Imperial College) had agreed to
speak at this event. The workshop would be held on Wednesday 18th June
at the Camden campus of the Royal Veterinary College. There would be no
room hire costs.
3. Events Programme 2002/3
a) October 2002: Applying to library schools (Co-ordinator: Angela Jefkins).
This event would be held from 2.30pm to 5.00pm on Thursday 10th October
in the training room at University of London Library. Speakers were
confirmed as Michael Martin (CILIP) to give an overview, David Nicholas
(City University) on the training provider's view, Philippa Dolphin
(Birkbeck College) on the employer's view and a recently qualified
librarian. Room hire cost would be £120 and tea and coffee 99p per
person. There would be a maximum audience of 40 for this event.
b) November 2002: Enriching your graduate trainee year (Co-ordinator: Diana Herman)
The Co-ordinator confirmed that this meeting was now fully organised, along the lines discussed at the June meeting.
c) February 2003: Career pathways (Co-ordinators: Janet Westcott and Elspeth Keith)
This event would be held from 2.00pm to 5.00pm on Thursday 20th
February at the Camden Campus of the Royal Veterinary College. The
event would be aimed at non-graduate library assistants. Angela
Frampton (CILIP) would speak on NVQ's & progression, Charmaine
Campbell (City & Guilds) would look at modern apprenticeships. A
further 2 speakers were being organised. There would be no room hire
costs and a maximum of 25-30 people for this event.
d) April 2003: Review of CPD25 programme (Co-ordinator: Cathy Parr)
It was noted that this event would be held during a morning of the week
commencing 9th April in the Pearson Lecture Theatre at University
College London. Discussion on topics was ongoing between the organiser
and Jean Yeah (Chair CPD25). Room hire costs were yet to be confirmed.
e) June 2003: Team Skills for Library Assistants (Co-ordinator: Diana Herman)
An alternative co-ordinator was being sought for this event since Diana Herman thought she might need to be away in June.
4. Visits 2002/3
a) Imperial College It was reported that Imperial College had agreed to
organise 2 visits each of which would comprise of a group talk on the
refurbishment followed by smaller parties touring the library. It would
not be possible to confirm dates until after the restructuring at
Imperial College was completed later in Summer.
b) Kew Gardens Archive
A response was awaited from Kew Gardens.
5. Any Other Business
Members discussed availability and charges for room hire. It was agreed
that the CPD25 JISCmail discussion group would be a good place to seek
out venues and discuss charges. It was noted that more institutions had
begun to charge for room hire and that the impact this would have on
CPD25 was yet to become clear.
6. Dates of Future Meetings
The next meeting would be held on Tuesday 19th November at 3pm. Venue was to be confirmed closer to the date.
