cpd25 Meeting of the Career Development Task Group
18th November 2008, 11am, LSE Library
1.
In attendance: Coral Black, Vicky Falconer (Administrator), David Gee (Chair), Antony Loveland, Vivien Robertson, Kelly Travers, Breege Whiten
Apologies: Liz Annetts
Breege Whiten was welcomed to the Group as Diana Herman’s successor.
2.
2008/9 Professional Qualifications programme:
The full programme is arranged, and has been advertised on the website and via mail-outs. Booking so far appears to be at circa 15 delegates per event, which, although lower than last year, seems reasonable considering the general downturn of interest in Chartership. 8 of the events have now been identified as suitable for all levels of staff and rebranded and advertised as such.
2.1
Report on the Introduction to CILIP Qualifications event (15th October 2008):
AL reported a need for re-thinking this event to make it more attractive. Alternatively it could perhaps be integrated with another session (e.g. Portfolio Forum).
2.2
Introduction to Marketing (26th November 2008):
The group agreed that the gathering of feedback was essential for this event as it is new to the programme.
2.3
Collection Development: E-Resources (10th December 2008):
VR reported that progress on this event was all well and on target.
2.4
Developing a Service (14th January 2009):
As above.
2.5
Supervisory Skills (25th February 2009):
As above.
2.6
Portfolio Forum (11th March 2009):
KT reported that she is working to find an ACLIP candidate to speak alongside the CILIP candidate that is already arranged.
2.7: Financial Planning (1st April 2009):
VR to send VF updated information for cpd25 website.
Hopefully participants will be able to work at individual workstations for this event.
2.8
Customer Care (19th May 2009):
BW to take over contacts from DH to help with planning for next year.
2.9
Copyright for Higher Education Professionals (10th June 2009):
All good progress.
2.10
Current Trends in Academic Liaison & Outreach (8th July 2008):
As above.
3.
2008/9 Seminar Programme:
The planning of the seminars is well under way, though some further work is needed.
3.1
Report on the Applying to Library and Information Science day (29th October 2008):
The event was popular, and feedback suggested that delegates found it very useful. The inclusion/format of the CILIP presentation needs to be rethought, as there were questions raised about whether it was the best use of time available. Next year the event may be marketed more as a professional conference, with bags and comprehensive handout packs. A representative from a distance learning institution should also be included in the speaker line-up.
3.2
Career Progression Day for Library Assistants (19th May 2009):
The morning session in the day will be devoted to marketing yourself; a representative from Sue Hill will be speaking. The afternoon will comprise of visits to two specialist libraries: City Business Library, and New Hunts House Medical Library (part of King’s College London). Participants will be able to book on either or both sessions – though priority will be given when allocating places for the visits to those who have booked for the morning.
3.3
Discussion forums for SDOs:
The series will comprise of two events, rather than three as previously suggested.
The format will be a lunch followed by an afternoon of discussion and exchange of best practice. The first session will be on organising staff inductions; it is anticipated that there will be two presentations. The second session will be on future leaders. AL, DG and CB to work on getting challenging and inspiring speakers.
4. 2008/9 Visits Programme:
The visits organised as part of the Career Progression Day will form the TG1 visit programme for 2008/9. As visits are popular, care must be taken to organise the booking process so that provision is made to interested parties without compromising the availability for people wishing to attend the Career Progression Day.
5. Any other business:
No
6. Date of next meeting:
June / July 2009
