cpd25 Planning Meeting of the Career Development Task Group

1st July 2008, 2.30pm, University of Westminster

1. Support Programme for candidates undertaking CILIP Professional Qualifications

The annual support programme of ten two-hour workshops is being planned and will be advertised on the website before the end of September 2008. The workshops (which include breakout sessions) will run once a month on Wednesdays between 4.00pm and 6.00pm. Prices have increased in line with inflation. DG will alter the advertising accordingly.

October: Introduction to Qualifications (Antony)

November: Marketing and Communications (Coral)

December: Collection Development (Vivien)

January: Developing a Service (Antony)

February: Supervisory Skills (David).

March: ACLIP and Chartership Portfolios (Kelly)

April: Financial Planning (Vivien) - Jean Yeoh to be invited to reprise her role.

May: Customer Care (Diana) - Sheila Ritchie to speak with the focus being on providing basic skills training and improving information literacy.

June: Copyright for HE Professionals (Liz) - Monique Ritchie will be invited to repeat her interesting and knowledgeable talk.

July: Supporting our Users: Current trends in academic liaison and outreach (David).

 

2. Seminars

October: November 08. Applying to Study Library and Information Science… and Beyond.

Successful extended all-day format to be repeated. Speakers from CILIP, two UK library schools (i.e. Sheffield and UCL), a recent LIS graduate, distance learning student and a head of service.

May 09: Career Progression for Library Assistants.
(Coral & David)
Morning session to include a session on career choices for library assistants and sessions on marketing yourself (e.g. CV’s, application forms, interview skills, presentation techniques).
Linked afternoon session to include a visit to a special library from a choice of three libraries in central London and an accompanying careers talk from a sector information specialist within the library.
Event to be advertised as bookable as either an all-day session for library assistants or as an afternoon visit + career talk session for library assistants.

Spring & Summer 2009: SDO Forum
(Antony, Coral & David)
Three separate discussion forums will be arranged with topics devised by those attending. The cpd25 mailing list will be used to contact potential delegates and task group members will be present during the session in order to facilitate and to highlight themes for the subsequent sessions. The format will be lunch followed by exchange of experience and best practice discussion sessions.
