Meeting of the CPD25 Career Development Task Group 1

Tuesday, 7th July 2009, Room 300b, LSE Library

 

In attendance: Coral Black, David Gee (Chair), Claire Hackshall (Administrator), Samantha Halford, Antony Loveland, Vivien Robertson, Helena Boreland Testa, Kelly Travers, Breege Whiten.

 

1.      Welcome and any apologies

Samantha Halford and Helena Boreland Testa were welcomed to the Group.  There were apologies from Liz Annetts.

 

2.      2008/2009 “Professional Qualifications Support Workshops” programme

2.1 Reports about the 2008/2009 workshops

It was agreed that all the workshops in the programme were very successful, with very good/excellent feedback for all sessions. It was noted that ‘Introduction to Supervisory Skills’ in particular received a lot of stand-alone bookings. It was agreed that the 2009/10 programme should be run along similar lines to this year’s. 

 

2.2  Planning for the 2009/2010 workshops

2.2.1 October 2009: Introduction to CILIP qualifications

It was agreed that AL would arrange this workshop.

 

2.2.2 November 2009: Introduction to marketing within academic libraries

It was agreed that CB would arrange this workshop.

 

2.2.3 December 2009: Introduction to Collection Development: e-resources

It was agreed that VR would arrange this workshop.

 

2.2.4 January 2010: Introduction to Developing a Service

It was agreed that AL would arrange this workshop.

 

2.2.5 February 2010: Introduction to Supervisory Skills

It was agreed that DG would arrange this workshop.

 

2.2.6 March 2010: ACLIP and Chartership Portfolio Forum.

It was agreed that KT would arrange this workshop.

 

2.2.7 April 2010: Introduction to Financial Planning

It was agreed that VR would arrange this workshop. The speaker that has been used up to now has left and a new name was suggested.

 

2.2.8 May 2010: Customer Care

It was agreed that BW would arrange this workshop.

 

2.2.9 June 2010: Copyright for Higher Education Professionals

It was agreed that HBT and SH would arrange this workshop.

 

2.2.10 July 2010: Supporting our users: current trends in academic liaison and outreach

It was agreed that DG would arrange this workshop.

 

3.      Seminar programme

3.1 Reports about the individual 2008/2009 seminars

      3.1.1 Applying to Study Library and Information Science…and beyond

It was agreed that the extended all-day format was very successful and there was very good/excellent feedback.

 

3.1.2 Career Progression Day for Library Assistants

It was agreed that the morning session of this event in particular was very good/helpful to attendees and there was very good/excellent feedback.

 

      3.1.3 Spring and Summer 2009 – two discussion forums for SDO’s

The two topics for these were: Induction programmes for new library staff and Staff Development – What does the future hold? There was very good/excellent feedback for both of these.

 

3.2  Planning for the 2009/2010 programme

3.2.1        Applying to Study Library and Information Science…and beyond  

AL and BW agreed to organise this, to be run late October/early November and possibly as a one-day conference. It was agreed that they would need a large space/venue for this event and that they would investigate the possibility of some sponsorship. Current library school students (full-time and part-time) would play  a role in this event in order to give prospective students an idea of the application and interview process, as would a rep from CILIP, a rep from a UK library school and a head of service.

 

3.2.2        Career Progression Day for Library Assistants

CB and DG agreed to organise this, to be run May 2010. It was agreed that more time should be spent on the morning events e.g. CV’s and applications,  and that a larger room and more food will be needed.

           

3.2.3        Two Discussion Forums for SDOs [Spring and Summer 2010]

It was agreed that CB, DG, KT and AL would work together to arrange these. It was agreed that there should be lunch first, followed by an afternoon exchange of experience and best practice discussion session for these. A discussion of possible topics took place e.g. organising staff development days for staff, and it was agreed that CH would email this year’s attendees for topic suggestions. 

 

4.      Visits programme

4.1 Reports about the 2008/2009 visits

The visits to City Business Library and KCL’s New Hunt’s House Information Services Centre went well.

 

4.2  Planning for the 2009/2010 programme

4.2.1         

SH agreed to organise a visit to the National Art Library in May 2010.

 

4.2.2         

HBT agreed to organise a visit to the remodelled Senate House in July 2010.

 

5.      Any other business

6.      Date of next meeting

DG agreed to circulate some dates for a Thursday morning meeting in November 2009,  with a Task Group 1 lunch taking place afterwards. [Subsequent to the meeting it was agreed to next meet at 11.00am on Thursday, 12th November 2009].
