4. Events Programme 2002/3
a) October 2002: Applying to library schools (Co-ordinator: Angela Jefkins).
This afternoon event would be targeted at Graduate Trainees and Library
Assistants. Angela explained that she was planning to contact those who
had spoken at this event in 2001. In addition Michael Martin from CILIP
had agreed to speak. She planned to speak to Antony Daws (Institute of
Education), who had organised the 2001 event, with a view to holding it
at the same venue. Angela would liaise with Diana Herman to ensure that
there was not any duplication between this and the following event. It
was agreed that Tim Hoof should contact the HE colleges to find out
Graduate Trainee numbers for the first 2 events of the year.
b) November 2002: Enriching your graduate trainee year (Co-ordinator: Diana Herman)
This whole day event would be targeted at Graduate Trainees and Library
Assistants. Diana reported that this would run along the same lines as
the event she ran in November 2001. It would take place between 10.30
am and 4.15 pm on Thursday 14th November at the white Hart Lane Campus
of Middlesex University. It was hoped to get 2 speakers from CILIP on
"Enriching your year", Jane Gardner (TFPL) on "Preparing for the Job
Market" and a short talk by William Masterston (Director of Information
& Learning Resource Services, Middlesex University).
c) February 2003: Career pathways (Co-ordinators: Janet Westcott and Elspeth Keith)

This event would be targeted at Staff Development Officers across the
M25. It was agreed that Cathy and David Gee would liaise with Jean Yeoh
to ensure that the Staff Development Officers' meeting did not
duplicate the work of the CPD25 Forum.
e) June 2003: Team Skills for Library Assistants (Co-ordinator: Diana Herman)
Diana said that she would be interested in running the above course.
f) Summer 2003: Job Shadowing Programme.
Elspeth Keith had been asked to raise the possibility of a
job-shadowing programme. It was noted that the School of Advanced
Studies already operates such a system within the School and that the
Open University had co-ordinated a cross-sectoral one in the Milton
Keynes area during Adult Learners Week this year. There was concern
that it might take a large amount of co-ordination. It was agreed to
investigate this matter further with a view to making a final decision
during the Autumn 2002 term. If the scheme were to proceed it would
need to be advertised around Christmas for a July/August scheme to give
sufficient planning time.
5. Visits 2002/3
Members agreed there was a need for the Steering group to clarify
whether visits would be free since they rarely attracted any costs.
a) Imperial College
It was
agreed to investigate visiting the re-organised Imperial College
Central Library in February 2003. Angela Jefkins would organise the
visits.
b) Kew Gardens Archive
Janet Westcott agreed to organise this event for July.

There was no other business.
