Meeting of cpd25 Task Group 3: Operations Management

17th March 2011 at 2.30pm

Room 417, Science Library (Malet Place), UCL

 

Present: David Archer, Martin Carbonell, Ian Clark, Alan Doherty, Caroline Fletcher, Claire Hackshall (Administrator), Aniska Kumra, Catherine Phillpotts (Chair), Pam Rew, Judith Wells and Peter Williams. In attendance: Claire O’Brien.

1. Apologies & Intros

Ian Clark from Canterbury Christ Church University and Judith Wells from Anglia Ruskin University were welcomed to the group and CP introduced Claire O’Brien from the University of Cork, who was visiting London to find out how training is dealt with by libraries here.  

2. Minutes of the last meeting: 12th January 2011

Accepted as accurate.

3. Reports on any events held since the last meeting

4. Update on 20010/11 events being planned

a. Library Access for non-traditional learners

DA and PW reported that they had decided to shelve this event and would instead offer another event which is detailed further down these minutes.   

b. Working Practices

CF reported that this event was all set up to run next Tuesday, 22 March but she had just been notified that one of the speakers had had to pull out, due to industrial action that was taking place that day. The group discussed the fact that the strike might also affect attendance levels on the day and so it was decided to postpone the event. 

c. Business Process Re-engineering

CP reported that now that she was back from sick leave she hoped to get this event prepared over the summer, with a view to running it in November.

d. Digitising Collections

MC reported that he was in contact with ULCC regarding the visit on this topic, but that he would like to hand over the organisation of the half-day seminar on digitisation to a new member of the group with a particular interest in this area. IC agreed to take this event forward with MC’s help.

e. Managing the Learning Environment

It was reported that the plans for this event were well underway and it was hoped that it could be run in early June.

f. Space planning

No further progress has been made regarding this event since the last meeting.

g. Dealing with enquiries – operational aspects

AD and AK reported that they were currently looking for a few more speakers on this topic and some recommendations were given to them.

h. Business continuity planning

CP and PR reported that they were meeting the following week to take this event forward.

i. Using new technology to promote your service

CF and IC reported that they hadn’t been able to do much planning for this event yet, but hoped to run it in July. 

j. Academic Libraries after the Browne Review

DA and PW reported that this is the title of the new event that they would like to run in June/July. The group agreed that this was an excellent idea.

k. Visit to NMRC

CP reported that due to sick leave she had been unable to get any further with this event but hoped to do so soon.

l. Visit to SOAS

CP agreed to contact SOAS to see if this visit could take place this summer. 

m. Visit to Imperial War Museum Library

AD confirmed that this visit was due to take place on 28th June.

n. Visit to Senate House

PR reported to group that this visit was still on hold due to building work, and that it looked like it would be taking place in the autumn.  

o. Visit to the Horniman Museum

It was confirmed that the Horniman Museum had agreed to run a visit for cpd25 but no date for this has been set yet. 

5. Claire O’Brien from UCC & AOB

A short discussion took place between Claire O’Brien and the group, on the topic of how training is dealt with by libraries here. 

6. Date of next meeting 

It was agreed that the next meeting would be held at 2.30pm on 9th June in R301 in the LSE Library, with hopefully two more meetings taking place after this during the summer.
