Minutes of the Operations Task Group held on 17th May 2005 Lawrence Durning Library, Senate House, 2pm to 3.30pm Present: Carole Pickaver (chair) Caroline Fletcher, Catherine Philpotts, Babs Viejo, Susan Gilbert, Dave Puplett (administrator) 1. Apologies Apologies were received from Roddie Shepherd and Zoë Smith. 2. Minutes of last meeting – 3rd March 2005 – The minutes were accepted as an accurate record. 3. Matters Arising Dave informed the group that all minutes from previous meetings had now been added to the cpd25 webpages. Carole enquired about the progress of a proposed database of speakers and venues to be held by the administrator. Dave confirmed that this had not been started and wasn’t likely to be until the summer at the earliest. 4. Programme 04/05 Seminars: Bidding for projects: The event was considered a success, but it was agreed that it should not be run again until 2006/7. Costing: The report referred to in previous minutes has not been circulated – Dave to find it and distribute. Overhauling Efficiency: This event has been cancelled at the planning stages as Carole and Zoë have been caught up with unforeseen institutional commitments. Self-Issue: This successful event could be run again next year, but perhaps with more emphasis upon the technology involved. The possibility of getting manufacturers to provide some literature for such an event will be discussed at the next meeting. This event would be scheduled for Feb/March time. Project Management: Dave reports that booking were healthy for this imminent event, and that the concerns over speakers voiced at the last meeting had been resolved. Space Management: Dave has no booking, and Carole volunteered to chase this up in the absence of Martin and Roddie. It was noted that it is likely this event will be carried over to next years’ schedule. ACTION: Carole to contact Martin and Roddie Breakfast Briefing: Research Assessment Exercise briefing – ACTION: Carole to bring this up at the next Steering Group meeting, to confirm that is appropriate. The group felt that this would be a valuable event and likely to be run next year. Visits: Natural History Museum, Royal Library Windsor: Both of these visits have not yet been organised as both libraries are booked up quite far in advance. Both visits are to be pursued for the programme 05/06, hopefully in the summer. 5. Programme 05/06 Focus Groups: The group discussed the value of such an event, and Caroline had a useful perspective of Focus groups being used at Middlesex University. It was agreed that this would be a useful half-day event. ACTION:Caroline and Susan agreed to organise it, probably beginning in November, with an aim to hold it just after Easter 2006. Conference: In the light of the success of the 24/7 event and the discussions held at the cpd25 review, the group discussed potential ideas for a conference. Although none of the ideas suggested at the review day were appropriate to this group, other ideas were discussed. Partnerships / Mergers / Collaborations: umbrella event This would form an all day event, potentially for about 40 delegates. Themes would be the pressure upon resources, finances, operational difficulties, consolidation of buildings and/or staff, the effect on staff structures, and the role of consultants. It was also felt that there would be plenty of potential speakers at the event who would be able to give candid case studies. ACTION: Carole to present this idea to the steering group, with a rough timescale of an event taking place in June 2006, with the organising of each section of the day split between task group members. ----------------- As a backup extra event, the Overhauling Efficiency event could be resurrected by Carole and Zoe. Visits: In addition to the two already discussed, a visit to Sutton public library was discussed. The value of this visit would be the opportunity to see the newly refurbished library, and the technology used there, after they began using 3M RFID. In summary: 2005/6 Nov – Space Management Self Issue – Feb/Mar Focus Groups - April Partnerships and Mergers Conference – June 6. Any other business: Dave gave a quick introduction of himself to the group. 7. Next Meeting: 20th July 2pm Lawrence Durning Library, Senate House. |
