Operations Management Task Group Meeting 30th October 2007, 10.30am, Kingston University, Penrhyn Road Campus

Apologies: Roddie Shepherd

07/08 Event evaluation.

Reflective practice. Ash Charlton proved to be a very stimulating trainer and the majority of those who attended requested a follow up session with a practice based focus. Caroline suggested a half day session be organised aimed at those who attended the initial session and a further subsequent all-day event be organised for later in the year. A June or July date would be best for the all day event and this year’s chartership candidates would be encouraged to attend.

Update on 07/08 Activities.

Benchmarking. To take place at Birkbeck on the 3rd December. Vicky is to act as main organiser on the day and will confirm the arrangements with speakers. Approximately fourteen places have been booked so far, out of the twenty available, and this means that the costs of the event should be covered.

Space planning. Martin to organise an event at Kingston Hill. The event will have a practical focus and Martin needs names of speakers who could tell useful positive or negative tales around managing in this area. Sheffield, UCL and Senate House were mentioned as examples to consider.

Visit to Kingston. Martin to organise this half-day visit for late January or early February.

Advanced Relationship training. Carole working with Beverly Baker to arrange a session in Late February. The trainer’s fee was approved by the steering committee and will need to be considered when arriving at the fee charged to delegates. The event will be aimed at those working at a supervisory or managerial level and twenty places will be available.

e-Learning in Context. The group debated the difficulties involved in pitching the event correctly, in terms of deciding on the content and audience. Cathy and Vicky are to take this forward.

Project Planning. Judith and Emma to organise. The Kubrick Archive at London College of Communication was mentioned as a possible source for speakers.

Visit to National Monuments Record Centre in Swindon. Cathy to arrange.

In addition to the above the group discussed possible venues for future visits, following the decision to drop a visit to Sheffield University Library from this planning round. Following input from M25 members, via the cpd25 steering group, the group would like to focus on Higher Education libraries for their visit programme. Visits to venues such as SOAS, UCL, Birkbeck etc. could be advertised as a series, aimed at library assistants.

Events in Planning for 08/09

Change Management. Seminar to focus on the ‘people’ rather than the ‘process’ involved with change. Ash Charlton may be asked to run the session.

Writing Collection Development Policies. Vicky’s suggestion that an event be developed that deals with how to write policy in this area dealing with evaluating and developing collections, incorporating e-resources and producing an acquisition policy.

Early on in the meeting an initial discussion was held around the possibility of organising an event that concentrated on arranging and administrating meetings and away days. It was felt that library staff are frequently called on to arrange internal and external events without any training on how to proceed.

AOB

Emma is likely to leave the group in the near future, following a re-arrangement of her duties at SOAS. Yvette Dickerson may take over Emma’s cpd25 commitments in January.

Date of next meeting.
