Meeting of cpd25 Task Group 3: Operations Management

  9th June 2011 at 2.30pm

Present: Martin Carbonell (Chair), Ian Clark, Alan Doherty, Caroline Fletcher, Claire Hackshall (Administrator), Aniska Kumra, and Peter Williams.

1. Apologies & resignations

David Archer, Catherine Phillpotts and Judith Wells sent their apologies, and Pam Rew resigned from the group as she is leaving Senate House Library at the end of June.

 

2. Minutes of the last meeting: 17th March 2011

Accepted as accurate.

 

3. Reports on any events held since the last meeting

 

3.1 Working Practices

CF reported that this event had taken place on 23rd May and had gone very well with good feedback afterwards.

 

3.2 Managing the Learning Environment

MC reported that this event had taken place on 2nd June and had been extremely well received. It was felt that this event could be expanded to a full day if another speaker can be found.

  

4. Update on 20010/11 events being planned

 

4.1 Academic Libraries after the Browne Review

PW reported that this event would be run the following week and had a good number of people attending, including a member of the press who had asked if they could come along. 

 

4.2 Dealing with Student Enquiries

AD reported that this event would also be run the following week and had a good number of people attending.

 

4.3 Using Social Networks

CF and IC reported that this event would be run on 19th July and had stimulated lots of interest and bookings.

 

4.4 Visit to Imperial War Museum Library

AD confirmed that this visit was taking place on 28th June and had proved to be extremely popular.

 

4.5 Visit to SOAS

CH confirmed that this visit was taking place on 16th June.

 

5. Cathy’s report on the planning afternoon

MC read out CP’s report of the cpd25 planning afternoon.

 

6. Any other business

A discussion took place regarding events for the next academic year and it was agreed that members would research these over the summer, with a view to taking these forward at the next meeting.

 

6.1 Business Process Re-engineering

CP wasn’t able to attend the meeting and so an update on this event wasn’t available.

 

6.2 Digitising Collections

IC reported that he almost had the programme for this event organised and just needed to get two more speakers. It was hoped to run this event in November. As MC would be leaving the group shortly PW agreed to help with setting up this event.

 

6.3 Space planning

As MC would be leaving the group shortly it was hoped that DA would now lead on this event. AD agreed to help with this. The group thought that a possible venue for this event could be Middlesex. 

 

6.4 Business continuity planning

It was hoped that this event would be run in late November and AK agreed to help CP organise it.

 

6.5 Visit to NMRC

The group discussed the possibility of this event taking place in early September and MC said he would pass this idea onto CP. 

 

6.6 Visit to the Horniman Museum

AD agreed to find out more about this visit from CP to help organise this visit.

 

6.7 Boutique Service

CF agreed to investigate a possible event on this topic.

 

6.8 Other possible events

Two other event ideas the group had were one on IT services/systems with an operations management slant and another on special collections.

 

6.9 Twitter

CF mentioned to the group that Twitter was proving very useful as a tool to get speakers for events and she would recommend using it for this purpose to others as it helps to extend the pool of people you are using.

 

6.10 Leaving the group

MC told the group that he would be leaving after the September meeting as he is going to be the Chair of Task Group 1.

 

7. Date of next meeting 

It was agreed that the next meeting would take place in September, preferably in one of the meeting rooms in LSE’s New Academic Building.
