4. Events Programme 2002/3
Changing the Culture - Jacky Camroux
This
event was held on 15th November at the London Institute. Caroline was
pleased to report to the group. Anne Bell and Mary Auckland both gave
very interesting presentations. The group split into two and did some
work on the benefits of change and overcoming barriers to success.
Caroline is writing up the results in a mini report to be circulated
among the group.
Managing Skills - Elaine Salter
The Managing Skills will be held at King's College over 3 separate
days, 21st 29th January and 6th of February. The course is already
fully booked with a reserve list of 4 delegates at the moment. The
group discussed whether or not to run this course again next year. A
decision may be taken on this at the SDO event in April.
Elaine presented the group with an outline for a "Senior Management
Skills" workshop for next year. The group agreed that it looked very
interesting. Caroline will circulate it to all the members for
discussion at the next meeting.
Action: Caroline to circulate the proposed programme.
Training for Trainers - Judith Cattermole & Val Straw
This
event will be held at the London School of Economics on the 26th
February. There are already 19 delegates booked on the course.
Managing Attendance - David McGrath
Judith was able to report that this event would take place at the
Slough Campus of Thames Valley University
http://www.tvu.ac.uk/about/travel/slough.html
The venue has good transport links and the group felt that, as the
event will be held over a whole day the journey would be worthwhile.
The day will cover how to deal with absence, lateness etc. The group
hoped to attract around 30 delegates.
Time Management - David Ward
David had made enquiries with Levelheaded and ACE. The group agreed
that they would use ACE for this event. ACE charges £485 for the
training. The Manuscript Training room at Senate House was suggested as
a possible venue. The group agreed the target audience would be subject
librarians and library assistants.
Guardian News Archive - Val Straw
The visit is booked for the 9th December 2002. The group is 10
delegates as the Archive is fairly small. The visit was very over
subscribed as anticipated and the group hoped to run it again next year.
Imperial War Museum - Jacky Camroux
Caroline has had email contact with Richard Golland from the Imperial
War Museum. Richard has offered 21st May 2003 in the first instance but
is hoping to be able to offer us two dates.
5. Any Other Business
Elaine reported that her department was going for Investors in People
status. As part of this the department want to set up a Staff
Development group that includes IT staff as well as Library staff.
Elaine asked for suggestions of how to work this successfully.
Val had found some interesting research into staff development that had
been done by La Trobe University Library Research Committee. Caroline
will circulate the questionnaire and an article discussing the results
to the group. The group hoped this might be an interesting discussion
topic for the SDO meeting in April. Action:Caroline to circulate the article & questionnaire.
Judith was pleased to report her successful trip to Serbia to speak to
Librarians there about staff development. Judith went as part of a
delegation organised by the TEMPUS Project that aims to build a
cooperative academic Library network in Serbia. Judith gave a
presentation on Staff Development in UK Libraries. To see more about
what kind of activities TEMPUS is involved in please see the link below

The
group thought that perhaps CPD25 could award some kind of bursary to
organisations who would be able to use it to improve opportunities for
staff development in countries that had not got this kind of provision.
This would have to be referred to the Steering Group for further
discussion.
6. Dates of Future Meetings
The next meeting would be held at the University of Westminster, Chalk Suite, room 5, 26th March 2003 at 3.30pm
