20th September 2007

Meeting of the Personal Effectiveness and Management Task Group

20th September 2007, University of Westminster, 3pm.

In attendance: Judith Cattermole (Chair), Donald Lickley, Claire Jeffrey, Val Straw, Jacky Camroux, Suzy Ball (Administrator).

1. Apologies: Sara Burnett, Susan Rivers, Gerry Power, Sally Faith.

2. Minutes: Accepted as an accurate record of the June 2007 meeting.

3. 07/08 Programme:

Events.

Dec: Succession Planning (Sara). No update from organiser but Judith to liaise with her to ensure planning is in progress. [Sara subsequently communicated with Judith that she was experiencing problems finding a speaker. Judith has emailed members of the group asking for suggestions and help to be sent to Sara].

Jan / Feb & May / June: Coping and Coping Even Better at the Counter (Jacky). Sheila Ritchie to facilitate and each event will run twice. All the dates are to be advertised at the same time and the events should be held in the SOAS Brunei Gallery if possible. Jacky to confirm dates and provide description for the advertising asap.

Jan/Feb: New Managers Series (Judith) – Brunei Gallery and trainer booked for the entire series. A slight increase in the fees charged is necessary to cover increases in overheads. It will be possible to book the entire series (£275 / £375) or individual workshops (£100 / £140).

Feb: Marketing (Claire / Val). Val is to speak to her LSE marketing colleague and arrange a half day session to take place at LSE. Once the scope of this event has been determined Suzy will pass on a description to Helen Alper, of task group 5, to limit any duplication of content with their planned marketing event.

April: Senior Library Assistants (Sally). No update from the organiser but Claire said a visit to the British Library would be popular with her colleagues. The group envisage the event as combining a visit with an exchange of experience element. The advertising would need to be carefully worded to encourage maximum attendance and the variety of titles given to staff in this position needs to be considered.

May: Change Management (Gerry). Gerry submitted a paper positing an outline for the day and appropriate speakers. The group suggested some adjustments [subsequently communicated to Gerry via Judith]. The booking arrangements could be crucial to the success of the event to ensure that workshops were attended by an even amount of delegates and that a suitable suite of rooms is found. Suzy to liaise with Gerry on this.

5th June 2008: Emotional Intelligence (Judith) – Ash Charlton to facilitate again. London Mathematical School has been provisionally booked.

Visits.

Jan: Bank of England (Donald). The visit should involve a tour of the main building and the library for a group of ten people.

Feb: Houses of Johnson & Dickens (Val). To be advertised as a series, along with Donald’s visits, once all the dates have been confirmed.

Spring: Houses of Freud & Handel (Donald). Keats’ house will be closed for refurbishment and alternatives venues, such as Handel’s House are being investigated.

June: University of the Arts (Jacky).

June: Kew Gardens (Sara).

4. AOB: Regarding the programme for 08/09. The group suggested that it would be a good idea to consider asking Sheila Ritchie to run an event focussing on interview skills.

5. Next meeting: 14th February 2008, 3.30-5pm, University of Westminster. Suzy to arrange.
