Meeting of the cpd25 Personal Effectiveness and Management Task Group 4 Thursday, 22nd October 2009, 2.30pm, R300b - LSE Library
In attendance:, Sara Burnett, Jacky Camroux, Judith Cattermole (Chair), Karen Ellis-Rees, Sally Faith, Claire Hackshall (Administrator), Donald Lickley, Gerard Power, Val Straw.
1. Apologies: Apologies were received from Florence Achen-Owor and Claire Jeffery.
2. Minutes of the last meeting: It was noted that for 5.6 (Transferable Skills) the minutes should read that SF agreed to look into this as a possible event.
3. Matters arising: The Chair thanked JC for her unstinting support and work for Task Group 4 over the years that she has been a member and wished her well for her retirement. The Group welcomed KER to the Group as her successor.
4. Planning the Programme for 2009-10
4.1 Leadership Development: lessons for aspiring leaders JC (Chair) reported that she had located a trainer for this series of training events, which is aimed at staff already in a management role and looking to develop their skills and move into a more senior role. The Group discussed how this would work and worked out the relevant prices for both members and non-members, as individual events and as a series of sessions. The maximum number of delegates for this course would be twelve. CH was asked to book appropriate venues for these.
4.2 Negotiating & Influencing DL reported that he had located a trainer for this event and that it would be offered both as part of the Leadership Development Series and also as an individual event.
4.3 Time Management JC (Chair) reported that this event has been arranged for 25th March 2010.
4.4 Emotional Intelligence JC (Chair) reported that this event has been arranged for 17th June 2010.
4.5 Coping at the Counter (1/2 day) and Coping Even Better (1 day) JC and CH reported that these events have now been arranged for 9th December and 31st March for Coping at the Counter and 17th March and 6th May for Coping Even Better, and that bookings were now coming in. The Group noted a suggestion that the titles of these events should be changed and JC reported that the trainer for these courses was suggesting ‘Service Skills – Desk & Counter’ and ‘Service Skills – Off Desk & Roving’. It was agreed that members would have a think about alternative titles and discuss these at the next meeting, with a view to implementing them in the next academic year.
4.6 Transferable Skills SF reported that she had been given a recommendation for a suitable trainer for this topic. It was agreed that this event should be run next Spring and that there was no target audience in mind i.e. that it was open to everyone.
4.7 Senior Library Assistants Conference SB reported that a venue had now been booked for this event. It was agreed that following on from feedback last year, there should be less visits next year, with more time being spent at each location. It was agreed that the advertising for this event should be ready by early January. CH was asked to look up last year’s feedback forms and see if any suggestions had been made by delegates on future themes and topics.
4.8 Marketing VS reported to the Task Group her research to date for this event and it was agreed that this would now be run in late January.
4.9 Writing for the Web GP reported that he had contacted a trainer with a view to their running this course and he was waiting to hear back from them. The Group suggested an alternative trainer in case this proved difficult. It was agreed that the event would be run next February and that the advert should stress that this is not a technical course. The main emphasise would be on writing content for the web, looking at audience needs, quality criteria and overall style.
4.10 Managing Budgets SF reported that due to the success of the Managing Budgets event that she ran in June, she had agreed to run the event again on 20 November.
4.11 Visit to the House of Commons DL reported that he had contacted the House of Commons about this visit and was hoping to hear very soon that this has been arranged for 17th February 2010. This would be as part of an open day for the House of Commons.
4.12 Visit to Westminster School SB reported that this had been arranged for 16th December 2009.
4.13 Visit to Kew SB reported that this had been arranged for 7th May 2010.
4.14 Visit to Kubrick Archive It was reported that due to the success of the cpd25 visit to the Kubrick Archive in July, JC had agreed to organise another visit for 15th December. CH reported that this visit was fully booked within a very short period of time and KER said that she would try to arrange a further visit for June 2010.
5. AOB: DL mentioned to the Group that he recently attended a very good event run by the AUA who are actively promoting continuing professional development at the moment and he recommended their events to others. DL also announced that he was taking voluntary severance from King’s College London next March and the Chair thanked DL for all his hard work and support during his six years as a member of Task Group 4.
6. Date of next meeting: Friday, 29 January 2010 at 11am in the LSE Library, followed by the annual Task Group 4 lunch at 12.30pm. It was noted that Jacky Camroux would be joining the Task Group for this.
