Meeting of cpd25 Task Group 4: Personal Effectiveness and Management

Thursday, 28th September 2011, 2pm

Room LG39, The Maughan Library, Kings College London

 

In attendance: Florence Achen-Owor, Sally Brock, Karen Ellis-Rees, Sally Faith (Chair), Claire Hackshall (Administrator), Claire Jeffery, Val Straw, Jo Taplin-Green.

 

1. Apologies, resignations and welcome

Apologies were received from Sara Burnett. Gerard Power had had to resign from the group in July due to work commitments and the group thanked him for all his hard work during his time as a member of the group. Jo Taplin-Green was welcomed to the group as a new member.

 

2. Minutes of the last meeting

This was accepted as an accurate record and the group asked it to be recorded that under item 4.9 Erica would definitely be running the New Management Programme.

4. Review the final events for the 2010-11 programme

 

4.1 Keep Calm and Carry On - An Event for Senior Library Assistants

It was reported that this event had taken place on 30 June and had gone well.

 

5. Consider any feedback from previous Steering Group Meeting:

SF reported back to the group on the July cpd25 Steering Group meeting.

 

6. Review progress on programme for 2011-12:

 

6.1 Leadership Development: lessons for aspiring leaders

S Brock reported that the dates for this programme had now been agreed for January – February 2012 and that she would be talking to the trainer about revising the advert for this shortly.

 

6.2 Time Management

CH was asked to liaise with the trainer for this course with a view to hopefully running it in December.

 

6.3 Emotional Intelligence

CH was asked to liaise with the trainer for this course with a view to hopefully running it in January.

 

6.4 An event for SLA’s

It was hoped to run this event on either 25th or 26th April and the organisers would be S Brock, S Burnett and FAO.

 

6.5 Student Behaviour Workshop

It was agreed to run this workshop in the spring, hopefully March and the organisers would be KER and JT-G. The trainer would be invited to the next task group meeting to talk through this event.

 

6.6 Managing Change Workshop

It was agreed to run this workshop in late spring/early summer, hopefully around May, and the organisers would be FAO and VS. The trainer would be invited to the next task group meeting to talk through this event.

 

6.7 Marketing Yourself: Transferable Skills

CJ was appointed the organiser for this course and agreed to talk to the trainer about tailoring it a bit more towards library staff. This would be run around November/December.

 

6.8 Moving into Management (formerly called New Managers’ Toolkit)

A new title for this course was discussed, possibly calling it ‘Moving into Management’. CJ was appointed the organiser of this two-day course which would run March/April.

 

6.9 Managing Negative Performance/Motivating individuals

FAO and KER agreed to be the organisers of this event. The group felt that it would be a good idea to use actors for playing out various scenarios, rather than doing role play.

 

6.10 Coaching Skills (not supervisory skills)

S Brock and S Burnett were appointed the organisers of this event which would hopefully run around March time. 

 

7.11 The Art and Science of Delegation & Motivation

VS agreed to run this event around May/June.

 

6.12 Supervisory Skills

S Burnett and JT-G were appointed the organisers of this event and would aim to run it December/January time.

 

6.13 Marketing Conference

The group discussed organising a marketing conference, aimed at identifying what your market wants. SF and JT-G agreed to investigate this with a view to running it in the spring.

 

6.14 Visit to House of Commons

S Brock agreed to organise this visit again.

 

6.15 Visit to Central St Martins Library

KER agreed to organise this visit.

8. Date of next meeting:

It was agreed that this would be held on Thursday, 2nd February 2012 at 2pm at LSE (hopefully NAB 8.02 again).
