Meeting of the Personal Effectiveness and Management Task Group 3rd June 2008, University of Westminster, 3.00pm. In attendance: Judith Cattermole (Chair), Claire Jeffery, Val Straw, Gerry Power, Sally Faith, Sara Burnet, Donald Lickley, Suzy Ball (Administrator). Note: Jacky Camroux arrived part way through the meeting. 1. Minutes: These were accepted as an accurate record of the February meeting. 2. 2007-8 Programme (March-July): Supervisors Conference. Sally reported that the event had been a success. The combination of visit and conference worked well. The level of administration needed was high and Maria Smith’s help was greatly appreciated. Managing Change. The full day event went well and Gerry noted that the audience attracted by the unusual approach to the topic was of a more senior level than originally expected. Emotional Intelligence. This event will take place on the 5th June and is fully booked. The popularity of the event means that it will run again at a similar time in 2009. Visit to University of the Arts & Kubrick Archive. The 18th June visit became fully booked very quickly and could run again as part of next year’s programme. Visit to the Bank of England Information Centre. Donald will arrange this for early July. Visit to the London Zoological Society. The 16th July visit is fully booked. Visit to Handel’s House. Donald will arrange for this to take place in July. A group of 8-20 could go depending on the option chosen. There will be a fee of £10 per person. 3. Review of target audience. The task group agreed to continue to cater for staff working at all levels within higher Education Libraries. Currently courses are put on which have a clear audience in mind such as the ‘new managers’ course and the ‘coping at the counter’ series. Other courses have a broader potential audience and the mix of staff attending the Emotional Intelligence event, for example, works well. The group discussed the practicalities of putting on events targeted at a Director-level audience. A clear remit would be needed and the event would need to be priced in line with the reduced number of delegates it is likely to attract. Reference was made to the NoWAL competencies framework and it was suggested that a task and finish group could devise something similar for use when planning cpd25 events. Judith will draft an update of the group’s remit to add the coverage of ‘soft skills’ and delete the reference to time management. 4. Programme planning for 2008-9 Coping at the Counter series: Jacky to arrange the dates with Sheila Ritchie. There will need to be an increase in the fees charged to ensure we cover costs. All session were fully booked this year and the two alternate dates for each session will run again. New Managers Series: Judith will contact Beryl to arrange the three dates. The course is of a high standard and will no longer be subsidised and therefore, in order to keep the group size to a suitable maximum, the fee charged may increase slightly. Emotional Intelligence: Judith will contact Ash Charlton to arrange a date in July 2009. De Montford: Claire will investigate holding an exchange of experience event in Leicester. Managing budgets and management information. Sally is going to look in to developing an event that covers budgets and statistics. Effective Meetings: Val and Donald will work on an event for late Autumn or early spring. Supervisors events: Jacky & Gerry, spring. Visits: School Libraries: Sara will arrange visits to contrasting school libraries, ideally a city academy and a public school will be approached. Law libraries: Gerry will arrange a visit to law firm library. Kubrick Archive: Jacky will arrange a repeat visit. Kew: Sara will contact Kew to arrange a summer date. Next meeting: 23rd September 2008, 11am, University of Westminster. To be followed by lunch.
