Minutes of the CPD25 Statutory Requirements & Legal Compliance Task
Group held on 13th May 2004 at 2pm in The Courtauld Institute Present: Jennifer Nordon, (Chair), Tim Davies, Ruth Harrison, Gerry Power, Nick Hollis, Christine Cooper, Robert Atkinson, Caroline Lloyd and Caroline Holebrook (Administrator) 1. Apologies Apologies had been received from Karen Ellis Rees. 2. Welcome to new members Jennifer welcomed Nick Hollis to the group. 3. Minutes of the last meeting – 11th September 2003 The minutes were accepted as a correct record. 4. Matters arising • Current programme Dyslexia Day 2 is the final event in the calendar for this year. It will be on 3rd June 2004 at University of London Library, Senate House. • Previous events Flexible Working The Breakfast Briefing and full day workshop on this topic were very successful. JSB provided the trainer. CPD25 under wrote these events as part of their remit to make very costly events accessible. Multicultural Awareness This full day event was fully booked and JSB again, provided the trainer. Legal Research Skills Gerry Power ran this event for the second time. The success of this event is spreading beyond the M25 with delegates from HM Customs & Excise and Leeds Metropolitan. EU Copyright Despite a technical failure this event was very well received and many current issues were raised and constructively discussed. • Visits Book Aid, Hackney College & New Scotland Yard Libraries These visits were all well attended. 5. CPD25 Review Day & Programme for 2004/2005 • Legal Research Skills Gerry will re-run this core event, possibly at the University of Surrey, in Nov/Dec 2004. • Freedom of Information The group decided to run this as both a breakfast briefing event for Heads of Service and Senior Managers and a full day seminar for practioners which also covers data protection. Each event will have a slightly different emphasis. a) The Breakfast Briefing will tackle the legal implications on Libraries for Senior Managers. Jennifer will engage JSB to provide a trainer for this event. This event is scheduled for December b) Jennifer and Christine will work together on the full day session. Andrew Charlesworth from Bristol was suggested as a possible speaker. • Plagiarism Jennifer would like to use this session to explore the new JISC service. There is also a possibility of a colleague from Oxford Brookes making a presentation. This event is scheduled for March 2005 • Multi Cultural Awareness Seminar After the success of the first Race Awareness session the group would like to re-run the event. Date: February 2005 Action: Jennifer to contact JSB • Mental Health Awareness Seminar The group felt this was an area that was yet to be properly explored in relation to discrimination legislation and inclusion issues. The CLAUD group of Librarians would be useful to discuss this proposal with. Nick Hollis agreed to take the lead on this event. Date: May 2005 Action: Caroline & Nick to liaise • Copyright Update The group agreed that as this area was developing all the time under the influence of new legislation it would be helpful to run an update. Paul Pedley was suggested as a good speaker in view of his excellent session at the Chartership event. Date: TBC Action: Ruth to contact Paul Pedley Other Events • Health & Safety The group felt this was an interesting area of compliance with many issues impacting on Library services such as: risk assessment. Jennifer agreed to explore the topic further to see if it might be possible to run an event on current pertinent issues. Date: TBC Action: Jennifer to research H&S Visits • House of Lords Ruth will try to arrange this visit for Oct 2004 • Laban Dance Centre Caroline will take the lead on this visit • Sir John Soane’s Museum Robert will take the lead on this visit for Oct 2004 6.
