Minutes of cpd25 Task Group 2: Quality Standards and Legal Frameworks

In attendance:

1.    Apologies

Susan Howard, Louise Hughes.

 

2.    Membership of the Group

The group welcomed Sian Blake form Kingston University as a new group member. Another new Member, Susan Howard from Imperial College had also joined the group but was not in attendance.

Kristy Widdicombe will be on maternity leave and rejoin the group next year.

 

3.    Minutes of the last meeting

Accepted as an accurate record. 

 

4.    Review of current training events 2009-2010

 

4.1 Contract and Supply Management (including negotiation skills) Full Day

Louise – was meant to run in July. Not sure where Louise had got to

Action: RA to check in with LH

 

4.2 Employment Law ( Robert – event ran in April)

RA reported that although attendees numbers were low, the event itself was very successful and the trainer very good. RA hoped to run a one-day version of this event next year.

 

4.3 Basic Copyright  (ML – half day) To run in 1st term 2010-2011

ML reported he had recruited the copyright office at Middlesex to run the session. The session would deal with issues of copyright from a practitioners point of view e.g. the kind of advice a subject librarian might give to academics.

 

4.4 Lies, damned lies and statistics (Matthew) – to run in Nov/Dec 2010

ML has recruited 2 speakers Adam Edwards & Angus Brown. They will give an overview of how they use/interpret statistics to make a business case. The session will be run around workshops and activities.

 

4.5 Quality Standards (LH) did not run

Louise wants to hand this event over to someone else.

Action: RA to contact Louise for more details

 

4.6 Making Libraries More Accessible: Supporting Students with Mental Health Difficulties)  (KW)  done

The group decided that we should try to run this event again as it was successful.

Action: VR to contact KW for details of speakers and programme

 

4.7 Assistive Technology ( AP& VR) to run in Nov/Dec 2010

Event did not take place this summer. Postpone to autumn term. 

Action: AP/VR to organise

 

5.    Review of visits 2009-10

 

5.1 Horniman Museum – LH -Done in  June

 

5.2 Tate Gallery - KW -Done in March

 

5.3 Society of Antiquaries – ML- Done in Dec 2009

 

5.4 BFI – Done in May 2010 ML

 

5.5 London Library – RA -Not done.

 

5.6 Wormwood Scrubs Prison Library - LH - 2 visits done in May

 

5.7 The Law Society ML -not possible to do visit

 

5.8 Middle Temple -RA- Done Feb   

 

5.9 Library and Museum of Freemasonry  - March VR done

 

5.10 Imperial ML- not done

 

6.    List of possible events for 2010

RA reported back from CPD25 steering group meeting on the topics the groups would like to see events for in 2010-11. On reflection there are very few topics that fit in with the remit of our task group.

 

The group Identified areas of training the group can organise to fit within the remit of this task group:

The events listed above will form a base programme of events and visits that can be run each year with minor modifications.

 

The Chair of the CPD 25 Steering Committee also asked members to arrange visits to libraries that make innovative use of space. The Group decided to organise visits to

 

* School of Pharmacy (VR) and to Birkbeck (RA) both currently undergoing refurbishment

* City University, for their use of group work spaces (ML)

 

Action : RA to report on the groups plans to CDP25 steering group.

 

7.    Any other business

8.    Date of next meeting

It was agreed that the group would next meet on Thursday, 19th August 2010 at 14:30pm and that RA would book a meeting room at Birkbeck for this.
