Cpd25 Task Group 1: December 2011 Steering Group report

Membership update
Jenny Cefai is taking planned sickness absence from work for three months from 30 November. Jenny has handed over her Task Group work to other members and hopes to return to the group in March 2012. Helen Mason has been on maternity leave and hopes to return to work – and the group – in January 2012.

Events update
This group last met in June. Unfortunately it proved impossible to convene a meeting in late November or December (our next meeting will be on 19 January) so I have had to rely on e-mails for this update.

Professional Qualifications Workshop Series
Speakers, dates and venues have been confirmed for all the Professional Qualifications Workshop Series (see below). Nine people have signed up for the whole series, which is fewer than last year, but others have signed up for one or more individual sessions (Claire to give update).

Introduction to CILIP Qualifications (26 October), Introduction to marketing within academic libraries (16 November) and Collection development: e-resources (7 December: moved from 30 November, for obvious reasons!) have already taken place, with good feedback. Although the overall scope of the programme is unchanged since the 2010-11 series, speakers who are new to the Professional Qualifications Workshops include Peter Williams (Supervisory skills) and Candy Jannetta (Customer care).

I understand that feedback for all the events held so far has been good to excellent.

Applying to study library and information science…and beyond
This event was held on 28 October 2011. Speakers were Maire Lanigan (City), Vanda Broughton (UCL), Sarah Ison (Brighton) and as usual a group of recently qualified librarians and current library school students. The event was considered a success with good feedback.

Career Development Day
This event is set to go ahead on 16 February 2012 with the theme of current trends in libraries and the future role of the librarian.

SDO forum 1
At the July meeting the group decided to bring this forward to the end of January. However, further development of this event (on the theme of training without training courses - e.g. through shadowing and exchanges) is required before a date can be set.

SDO forum 2
This is planned for July 2012. The group decided on a theme of training ‘hard-to-reach’ staff (e.g. weekend and overnight staff and sub-contracted staff). Speakers will include someone from Kingston talking about the work of managing the Night Team and this will include the 10-minute video we produced to train new staff.
