Minutes of the User Resources & Services Group 11th March 2004 University College London DMS Library Room 417 2pm Present: Janet Smith, (Chair) Sally Houston, Jane Rosen, Toby Clark, Eilis Rafferty, June Hedges, Kate Warner, Sam Martin, Kathy Paterson, Rachel Sylvester & Caroline Holebrook (administrator) 1. Apologies There were no apologies 2. Welcome to new members Janet welcomed Kathy. 3. Minutes of the last Meeting Amendments: Kate Warner had been present at the last meeting 4. Matters arising • Power point presentations Janet reported that this had been raised in Steering Group and that it had been decided that power points would not be put on the web site. Caroline will of course circulate presentations on request. • Event Guidelines Janet suggested, as a supplement to the guidelines the group has produced, that it would be good practice to include signatures on emails so that recipients have full contact details, including phone numbers, to hand. 5. Programme – Reports of Events to Date Visits • Bow Ideas Store Caroline and Eilis were able to report that both these visits had been successful. An opportunity to see some really interesting approaches to public library service delivery. Seminars • User Education Rachel and Caroline were able to report that the event had been well received. It was noted that although there was a lot of very useful discussion about learning styles the next step may be actual teaching skills and a more specialised focus. • Promoting Library Services – “The Invisible Team�? Sally was pleased to report that this event was extremely well received. The speakers all had different experiences and approaches to marketing and promoting their services. There was good discussion and many delegates brought examples of their own publicity material for comparison. • Special Collections Janet reported that this event was very useful and generated good discussion. The delegates seemed to be looking forward to the second part of the series which is planned for the early part of the new academic year 2004/2005. 6. Programme – Forthcoming events Visits • BBC Information Service Rachel was able to confirm that this visit will take place on 2nd June 2004 and will accommodate a maximum of 15 people. • City Business Library Jane has agreed to host one of the visits to the City Business Library on 23rd June 2004. This is an additional event to the core programme. Seminars • Training the Trainers Collaborative event with London Health Libraries Group has been postponed pending resources to run a larger-scale event than previously envisaged. • Scholarly Communication This event will take place on the 17th March 2004 at Bonhill House. • CPD25/LMN Disability & Technology Caroline was able to report that bookings for this stand at 35, just over half of the potential capacity. This event has attracted our first European booking from the British Institute in Paris. A chair is still required for this event. • Virtual Learning Environments Eilis is convening this event with the UC&R group. The event will be held at Queen Mary on 26th May 2004. Caroline will liaise with Eilis and David Clover, Chair of UC&R to produce publicity for the event which highlights its collaborative nature. • E-Resources Update Toby and June were able to report that the date for this event will be 17th June 2004. It is envisaged that this event will only be a half day event. Stephen Prowse and Nick Lewis have both confirmed that they will give presentations. • Enquiry Services Jane and Kathy were pleased to report that this event will take place on 7th July 2004. The speakers will be Tim Buckley Owen, Head of External Relations at CILIP, Victoria Stott of the National Art Library, Goretti Considine of the City Business Library and Claire Gabriel of Middlesex University. A chair is required. 7. CPD25 Review The review day will be held on 23rd April 2004 1pm to 5pm at King’s College London, Strand Campus in the Council Room. • Possible events for the new programme 1. Collaborative event with London Health Libraries 2. Special Collections Part 2 3. Graham Bulpitt’s suggestion regarding combining suppliers’ demonstrations with discussions about practical applications 4. Teaching Skills Workshops 5. Series of Information Skills Training Workshops – possibly subject based(?) 6. Enquiry desk courses – on the format previously offered by CILIP 8. Any other business None 9. Date of next meeting The next meeting will be held on 24th June 2004, 2.30pm at Imperial College London CH 12/03/04 |
