Monday 16th January 2012
London School of Economics, Library, Room 301
Present: Lydia Parsonson (LP), Pat Simons (PS), Craig Brough (CB), Grainne McDermott
(GM), Simon Collins (SC), Craigie-Lee Paterson (CLP), Antonella Yarnold (AY), Paul Johnson
(PJ)
1. Welcome, Resignations and apologies
All welcomed Craig Brough (Royal Botanics, Kew Garden) to the group. Fiona O’Brian, a new member sent her apologies.
2. Minutes of the last meeting
PS informed the group that the Minutes were put together from memory, thanked LP for typing
them up. Accepted as an accurate record.
3. Report on Events
3.1 Visit to the Women’s Library: SC confirmed the visit went ahead on Friday 13th January,
with 13 guests (including SC), agreed the visit could be done again.
3.2 Shared Services is going ahead on 27th January 2012. LP confirmed only 7 out of 30 places
have been taken so far. GM confirmed she would rewrite the advert so CH could readvertise.
3.3 Changing role of Library Assistants, GM agreed this is going ahead for 20th March 2012 at
the Mathematical Society. All speakers have been confirmed but marketing has not commenced
yet.
3.4 Visit to Ravensbourne; PS advised is being cancelled.
3.5 Research Support; Due in April 2012, AY recently started looking into this, looked into
further presentation at LILAC as it is one of the key teams on the conference. AY keen to get a
speaker from City. AY wants to get a speaker from Vitae involved as they do a lot of workshops
for researchers. GM commented on a previous event where Joanna Ball was a speaker, AY
would like to be given an update on the project. AY notified the whole group that if they have
projects at own universities that could be promoted.
3.6 Olympic Visit; PS advised this is going to have to be reorganized. A visit to UEL instead
could take place to the British Olympic Association Archive. Suggested by PS that if a visit to
UEL at Stratford were to take place, visitors could walk to the Olympic grounds to see what was
available to view. CLP is going to talk to contacts at UEL to see if visitors are allowed. Queen
Mary is available as a back up with someone to talk generally about what is going to happen in
East London from an educational point of view.
3.7 Converging Service; SC has recently contacted Liverpool John Moores for this to take
place in June. SC asked for ideas with speakers. GM recommended Kath Morgan from Sussex
(non converged) to Brighton (converged). PJ advised Kings have gone converged to deconverged.
PS suggested Queen Mary’s as they are taking in Careers and losing IT side of
things, this results in an unconventional converging. GM suggested speaker at Queen Mary could
talk about ‘fears’ and ‘positives’ as it could still be too early to give a full view by June 2012.
3.8 Visits to Wellcome Library
3.9 Changing the LMS
PS advised another group are dealing with this.
3.10 Event for Academic Liaison Libraries; PS met with SC and agreed on full day event with
a mixture of group discussions focused on subjects and speakers. There is a selection of ideas for
speakers with the idea of getting a key note speaker along with two or three others. One speaker
has given a positive response and would like to talk about what they do with Kindle at
Roehampton, there will be some further discussions about social networking and stock selection.
This event will take place at the end of May 2012.
3.11 Special Collections Showcase; was suggested at the last Steering Group. PS advised it was
an event for people who have special collections to come and talk about them. PS suggested CB
couls arrange a talk either at Kew, in which case, the Kew collections could be spoken about and
viewed and then someone else talking about related collections, or do the talk in central London
with other speakers representing other collections. CB agreed to organize this showcase. AY as an experienced member to help CB arrange this for July 2012. Middlesex Museum of Domestic Arts was suggested by PS for a speaker, as well as Resource and Research Centre of Textiles in Goldsmiths, CLP has confirmed they are happy to do so.
JT has been contacted about whether she is still keen to organize a trip to Surrey which she has
accepted and would like to arrange for June 2012.
4. Any Other Business
PS advised that the CILIP journal has asked for a column to be written by CPD25 if anybody
wanted to contribute.
5. Date of next meeting
Dependant on when the cpd25 Annual Planning Day is to take place.
