Meeting of the cpd25 User Resources and Services Task Group
3rd December 2007, City University School of Nursing, 2.30pm

In attendance: Janet Smith (Chair), Karen Drury, Jane Rosen, Antonella Yarnold, Pat Simons, Jennifer Treherne, Suzy Ball (Administrator).

1. Minutes of last meeting. Accepted as an accurate record.

2. Matters Arising.
Janet informed the group that the New Review of Information Networking has published some of the ‘Library in the Interactive Environment’ conference papers. The following have now been published in Vol.13, no.1 (May 2007), along with one unrelated paper:
The library in the interactive environment [Introduction to the published papers], Janet Smith, p.1-2
Improving the student experience - How can the library help? Jean Sykes, p.23-30
Integrating library services and resources at the Open University, Susan Eales and Non Scantlebury, p.31-38
Libraries, social software and distance learners: Blog it, tag it, share it! Jane Secker and Gwyneth Price, p.39-52
Web 2.0 to library 2.0 - From debate to reality, Richard Wallis, p.53-64.

The remaining papers are to be published in Vol. 13, No 2. A notice indicating their availability has been added to the ‘latest news’ section of the website.

3. Programme 07/08 – Events held.
15th November: Visit to SPLASH, University of Surrey (JT). Jennifer and Suzy outlined the very positive informal feedback received during the event. 15 people attended and the informative and entertaining talk given by Penny Burden was appreciated. The small group tours given by SPLASH staff generated a lot of questions and debate amongst the delegates and several people suggested a repeat of the visit next year.

2nd November: Visit to London Library (JH). June organised this successful visit. The event was fully booked with several people on the waiting list. The group thought there was scope to run the visit again perhaps with a focus on the fundraising side as London Library staff indicated that they are embarking on developing their strategy, and resource allocation, in this area.

4. Programme 07/08 – Events in planning.
November/December 2007: Inform25 roadshows and connected event for system librarians (originally for c. March). Now that the Resource Discovery Group has diminished, the task group has been asked to take on full responsibility for these events. The group felt that these will need to be addressed in the 08/09 programme. Jennifer volunteered to organise the systems librarians' event, subject to a change in circumstances.

The Wellcome Library visit is to be postponed until Spring. Janet to organise.

31st January 2008: Learning and Teaching 1: Interactivity in Information Skills Training (AY/ER). Antonella and Eilis are chairing this event. Three speakers will each give a presentation and have time for a Q & A session. The topics to be covered are voting handsets (Ruth Harrison, Imperial) and blogs and interactive teaching (Lisa Foggo, Leeds) with an introductory talk by Emily Shields (MMU).

12th February: Marketing Day (HA/JR & TG4). Helen and Jane are working with Val Straw, from Task Group Four, on this all-day event. A room has been arranged at LSE and bookings can be made for either the full day or just the AM or PM session. Speakers include Liz Davis (Imperial), Frances Norton (M25) and Marysia Henty (LSE).

April: Customer Care in a Self-Service Environment (KD). An afternoon session is being planned involving two - three speakers. The group clarified that the emphasis would be on the experience of libraries where various self-service approaches are in operation, and hence the event will cover different ground from CILIP's event on skills for roving help staff. Topics will include an exploration of the self service ethos, employing ‘roving’ staff and may also tap into the ‘ideas store’ approach of public libraries.

May: Metadata (PS). Pat is currently liaising with a TFPL staff member to determine their possible charge.

June: Learning and Teaching 2: Inductions (AY/ES). Antonella and Eilis are to organise the event and a debate was had about the topics to be covered. A conference was held by another organisation approximately one year ago which covered similar ground but the group felt the event should go ahead as induction techniques are always an area of interest for cpd25 members. Janet suggested an all day event could be arranged with two clear themes: education and teaching techniques; I.T applications and usage.

Late June: Visit to Oxford Social Sciences Library and possibly another library (JH).

08/09: Event for systems librarians (JT). Following discussion around the requests of the Inform25 group Jennifer volunteered to organise an event to meet their needs.

5. AOB. Janet outlined the forthcoming review of the task groups that had been discussed at the October meeting of the Steering Group.

Action: To be added to the February meeting agenda - all to think about what works well in existing arrangement of task groups and what could benefit from change.

6. Date of Next Meeting: 27.2.08, 2.30pm. Antonella to arrange venue.
