CPD25: Training and development for HE Libraries in the London Region Chair: Jean Yeoh, ISS Corporate Services, King’s College London Meeting of cpd25 User Resources & Services Task Group 9th June 2005, University of Westminster 10 am. Present: Janet Smith, (Chair), Toby Clark, Eilis Rafferty, June Hedges, Kathy Paterson, Jane Rosen, Dave Puplett (Administrator); present by invitation: Anne Weist 1. Apologies Apologies had been received from Rachel Madley & Kate Warner. 2. Minutes of the last meeting The minutes needed Kathy and Jane Rosen’s names added to the attendees, a title added to denote the meeting, and the insertion of ‘one of’ in the description of the Enquiry seminar. ACTION: Dave to update. 3. Matters arising Janet reported on item 5 from the previous meeting – at Steering Group level, it was agreed that the Administrator should write reports of the feedback for each event. However, it was agreed that this task group would continue to create their own reports for the task group chair. 4. 2004/05 Programme: Planning a Teaching session: - The feedback was positive from this event, which ran smoothly. One-off Teaching - Dave attended along with Sam, and reported that the speaker arrived an hour late after getting dates mixed up. This was her error, but she recovered very well indeed. The group were able to stay for an extra hour to complete the training. However, Alison Ahearn, the speaker had promised follow up notes for the delegates, which Dave was yet to receive, despite chasing Alison via email. ACTION – Janet to chase Alison for follow-up ACTION – Dave to investigate feedback from event and forward to Janet. Large Groups - Rachel attended; Dave was present at start and end only. Feedback was very positive, with several comments about how the session could easily have been longer. Marketing Library Services - Attended by Jane and Toby. Feedback was positive, with only one comment about the lack of coffee. The venue was air conditioned, which was good, but is probably not appropriate for many cpd25 events, as catering is very limited. CPD25: Training and development for HE Libraries in the London Region Chair: Jean Yeoh, ISS Corporate Services, King’s College London Small Groups - Attended by Toby and Dave. Feedback not yet formally compiled, but seems positive. Again, comments about how session could have been longer, especially as it contained some dense theoretical content from Martin. - Toby reported that the Brunei Gallery was an excellent venue. International Students - To be held on 12th July 10-1, venue to be confirmed. 4 speakers have been lined up, none of whom are librarians. Therefore Kathy has placed herself as chair, to ensure the discussion veers towards libraries. Dave will advertise within the week. Accreditation - Two speakers lined up, for the 7th July. SOAS has been booked as a venue. The event runs 11-1 to allow speakers time to get there. Induction - 3 speakers arranged. Will include a short discussion of induction for international students. June or Rachel may chair this event. 26th/27th July. Dave to find a room and advertise. 5. Group Membership Thanks extended to Rachel and Sam, who are both leaving the group. Jean Yeoh is actively looking for replacement members, who will hopefully be in place before Autumn term starts. 6. Remit It was agreed that the group should aim for 1 event per task group member, in this case 9 people. However in cases where people preferred to work in pairs, this would be compensated for so that everyone has an equal workload. In most cases, there would be a lead for each event, with a backup person to help out. It was also agreed that the written remit for the group should also be changed. ACTION: Janet to forward new remit to Dave to publish on web. 7. Review Day Janet listed the suggestions from the cpd25 review day that were appropriate to this task group, in order of popularity on the day. User Education for the MTV generation Teaching in a Virtual Learning Environment CPD25: Training and development for HE Libraries in the London Region Chair: Jean Yeoh, ISS Corporate Services, King’s College London Reading List Management Ebooks Customer Care – this was borderline for this group, however aspects of student welfare could be integrated into customer care events run by other task groups. ACTION: Janet to speak to Judith Cattermole about the content of their Coping at the Counter event. What do users want? - Not about the process of undertaking a survey, but interpreting the results. Widening Participation - Agreed not enough content for a event on its own. 8. 2005/6 Programme Teaching and Learning: This series would be changed in format away from the series of short seminars into two full day sessions. This makes it easier for Dave to administrate, and gives the content less of a rushed feel, which was noted in the 2 hour sessions this year.
